Mary Ann Strandell: Floating Steps brings together a group of paintings and 3D lenticular prints by American artist Mary Ann Strandell. Presented as a virtual exhibition the selection of works reveal the fluid and mediated nature of space, perceptions and memories, and shows its rising relevance in reality today against the backdrop of the quarantine as a new normal. Strandell frequently denotes architectural wonders in New York City, including the all-glass staircase at the Apple Store in Chelsea, and the Hudson Yards projects initiated in 2010. Her vibrant and dynamic representation of these locations reminds one of the melancholic beauty of empty cityscapes while simultaneously arouses nostalgic re-imagination of one’s experiences related to the place. In her rendering of modern living rooms, the mid-century sunken coach collides with icons from other eras and cultures—such as a sputnik lamp, 15th-century Chinese vase, cocktails, and kitsch porcelain, marking on the long-existed, complex and unstoppable process of global exchange. By engineering her paintings and drawings into lenticular prints, Strandell disassembles integral spatial perception down to the cumulation of transitory imageries and interweaves multiple layers of visual narratives. The corduroy surface becomes an allegory of the computer screen, where hand adjustment replaces physical steps, meanings float around, and conversations converge.
